The overall mission of the Williamsburg Choral Guild is to promote the study, performance and public awareness and enjoyment of fine choral music.
The Williamsburg Choral Guild was founded in Williamsburg in 1975 by a group of men and women who liked to sing and who had experience over the years in various choirs and choral groups. Among the founding directors were Tom Marshall and Mary Gonzales, both still well known and active in Williamsburg music circles.
The WCG is composed of more than 80 local men and women from a variety of backgrounds. They share a common love of good singing and the camaraderie that the organization provides.
In addition to performing three concerts each year, the WCG has participated in numerous community activities including The Occasion for the Arts; Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Williamsburg Symphonia for the 300th anniversary celebration; with the Williamsburg Consort Band; Christmas caroling on Merchant's Square; at corporate holiday parties; and at free concerts at Eastern State Hospital and King of Glory Lutheran Church. The WCG is self-supporting. Income is derived from grants and aid from various public and private organizations, dues, donations, ticket sales, honoraria, the sale of concert program ads, and fund-raising activities such as silent auctions and selling refreshments at public events. Over the years the WCG Artistic Directors have included Tom Marshall, Robert Nance, Sarah Ford Bland, Genevieve McGiffert, John Guthmiller and Jay BeVille. Visiting conductors have included Frank Lendrim, James S. Darling, Ann Porter, H. Edwin Godshall, Joel E. Suben, Russell Stanger, Rayleen Watson, and Rupert Vartanyan. The Guild is a member of Chorus America, a national association of choral groups and singers that promotes choral music. |
