Dvorák's Stabat Mater must be one of the most compelling declarations of faith in musical history. The powerful text speaks to the grief of the Virgin Mary at Christ's crucifixion, turns into a prayer to Mary and ends with the hope of resurrection. Many composers have set the Stabat Mater to music, but Dvorák's stands out with its extraordinary spiritual intensity and emotional range. It is an intensely personal work, reflecting the composer's grief at his own tragic losses, yet is tremendously uplifting, offering hope and faith throughout.
