What is Night to you? For some it is the time to sleep, dream and rest the mind and body; for others a time to wake and work. What does nightfall bring? Does the darkness bring fear or offer calm and a sense of peace?
Three Nocturnes by Dan Forrest, composed in 2006 and the centerpiece of this program, is a trio of short pieces based on texts about stars by three different poets: Sarah Teasdale, Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman. Through beautiful settings, the texts come vividly alive in the composer's lush harmonic writing and colorful use of percussion.
Other works on this program will inspire the listener and awaken the senses as we delve into the world of the Night. In addition to Three Nocturnes, this program will include
- "Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying", Melius Christiansen
- "Sure On This Shining Night", Morten Lauridsen
- "O Schöne Nacht", Johannes Brahms
- "Choose Something Like a Star", Randall Thompson
- "Now Welcome Summer", Robert Washburn
- "A Calm Sea, A Prosperous Voyage", Ludwig van Beethoven
- "A Basque Lullaby", Dan Forrest
- "You are the Music", Dan Forrest
