A festive and joyful work, Regina Coeli represents Mozart’s early years in Salzburg, a quite different style from that of his final composition, the Requiem in D minor, written in 1791. Although questions surrounding the Requiem’s commission, its completion and the nature of Mozart’s illness continue to engage scholars and laymen, it remains one of the most personal, impassioned and profound of his works.
