Music of the People – American Folkways

The Williamsburg Choral Guild celebrates folk song tradition in the Americas, in both liturgical and secular settings.  Misa Criolla is a folk mass based on the rhythms and traditions of Hispanic America, while the compositions of Dan Forrest and Aaron Copland pay tribute to our American musical heritage.

The concert features the following works:

Ariel Ramíerz – Misa Criolla

Dan Forrest – American Folk Tunes, including Two Colonial Folksongs: “The Nightingale” and “The Girl I Left Behind Me” (commissioned by the Guild for their 35th anniversary) and others

Aaron Copland – Old American Songs, including “The Boatmen’s Dance,” “Simple Gifts,” “At the River” and others

Join  Artistic Director Jay BeVille, the chorus, professional soloists Gary Montgomery, tenor,  Devonte Saunders, tenor, and Christopher Mooney, baritone, joined by pianists  Jane Alcorn and Elaine Howell and an orchestral ensemble as they perform selections originating with the common people.
