Dr. Seung-Hye Kim is a pianist and composer of both acoustic and electroacoustic music. Her works have received awards from competitions staged by the Korean Electro-Acoustic Music Society (1st place) and the Italy Percussive Arts Society (3rdplace). Her piece Fluctuation for flute and computer was published on CD Series (vol. 16) of the Society of Electro-Acoustic Music in the US. Her composition and collaborative works have also been selected for presentation at numerous conferences in the US and abroad including the Society of Composers Conferences, the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival, Listening In the Sound Kitchen, Society of Electro-Acoustic Music in the US, The 3rd Practice, Women’s Electro-Acoustic Listening Room, Seoul International Computer Music Festival, International Computer Music Conference, Siggraph, Synthèse, and Korean New Music Symposium.
Her performance background and research focus on music and gesture also instilled a particular interest in other performing arts. She has worked collaboratively with a videographer and with numerous choreographers on numerous projects. One of her collaborations, Global Drift, for real-time audio and visual installation/performance, was performed in Brisbane, Australia as part of the international large-scale artistic project Accented Body.
As an active pianist, Dr. Kim has performed a wide range of repertoire from classical works to the 20th century Avant-Garde music with extended piano techniques as well as contemporary works for piano and computer. Her most recent recital, Musicand Poetry, was performed at Christopher Newport University, Norfolk State University, and Sweet Briar College. The program featured works by living composers that interlaced the recorded narration of poetry as well as electronic sound with piano. Her performances have been featured at numerous new music conferences and festivals in the US and abroad, as well as on multiple platforms such as Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, and KKBox. She also has performed with various musicians and ensembles, and has been on the faculty for the Torggler Summer Vocal Institute at Christopher Newport University.
Dr. Kim received a PhD in Music Composition from the University of Florida, an MA in Electroacoustic Music Composition from the Korean National University of Arts, and a BA in Piano Performance from Seoul National University.Currently, she is a lecturer of composition, keyboard, and music theory at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, where she lives with her husband Max and two Samoyed dogs, Vili and Vyke.
